Where to stay

The best area to stay in Amsterdam for a business trip

Zuidas, the centre, or near the RAI? Where to base yourself in Amsterdam for work, matched to where your meetings are and how you want to spend the evening.

Last updated: 4 June 2026

For a business trip, the right area comes down to one question: where are your meetings? If they are in the south, base yourself in the Zuidas and walk to the office. If you would rather have restaurants and nightlife on your doorstep, and don’t mind a short commute, stay in the centre. The North South metro line links the two in about ten minutes, so you can’t really get this badly wrong.

The three areas that matter

Zuidas, for efficiency

Amsterdam’s financial district: ING, ABN AMRO, the WTC, the big law and consulting firms, and the RAI nearby. Stay here and your commute is a short walk.

  • Best for: meetings in the south, RAI events, early starts, minimal commuting.
  • Downside: it is a business district, so it is calm and a little lifeless after hours, with some restaurants closing early.

City centre & canal ring, for the evenings

The Amsterdam most people picture: canals, restaurants, bars, walkable everywhere.

  • Best for: travellers who want dinner and a drink within reach, or who are mixing in some leisure (“bleisure”).
  • Downside: busier and more touristy, and a 10 to 20 minute trip to the Zuidas.

Oud-Zuid (Museum Quarter), the quiet middle ground

Elegant, calm, well connected, near Vondelpark and the museums. It sits between the centre and the Zuidas in both geography and feel.

  • Best for: a more refined base that is still an easy hop to either work or dinner.

How we’d choose

  • Meetings in the Zuidas, in and out fast: stay in the Zuidas.
  • Want Amsterdam in the evenings too: stay in the centre or Oud-Zuid and take the metro south.
  • RAI conference: the Zuidas, or right by Amsterdam Zuid station.

Booking note: specific hotel picks per area, with direct booking links, are added in the next pass. We rate them on the things that matter on a work trip: fast WiFi, a real desk, a quiet room, and quick transit access.

FAQ

What is the best area to stay in Amsterdam for business? Meetings in the south point to the Zuidas. If you want nightlife and dining nearby, choose the centre. The metro links them in minutes, so either works.

Should I stay in the Zuidas or the city centre? Zuidas is efficient but quiet after hours; the centre is lively but further out. The North South metro line connects them in about ten minutes.

Where should I stay near the RAI? In the Zuidas or around Amsterdam Zuid station, much of which is within walking distance.

Is it better to stay away from the Red Light District? For a business trip, yes. The Zuidas, Oud-Zuid or the canal ring are quieter and more professional, and still well connected.
